Oral medicine is an integral component of healthcare and important for appropriate evaluation, diagnosis and management of patients. This course will provide an opportunity to hone your diagnostic skills and refine your management strategies for common oral medicine conditions seen in dental practice, including oral mucosal lesions, oral manifestations of systemic disorders, and chronic orofacial pain conditions.
Learning Objectives
- Appreciate the role of oral medicine in clinical healthcare.

Understand techniques for clinical evaluation and diagnosis of:
- Ulcerative conditions of the oral mucosa.
- Hypersensitivity disorders of the oral mucosa.
- Oral manifestations of systemic diseases.
- Temporomandibular disorders.
- Chronic orofacial pain conditions.
- Recognize acute and chronic management strategies of these disorders including appropriate referral for specialty care.
About the Speaker
Eric T. Stoopler, DMD, FDSRCS, FDSRCPS
Dr. Stoopler is a Professor of Oral Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. He completed his undergraduate studies at SUNY Binghamton University in 1994 and earned his DMD from Penn Dental Medicine in 1999. Dr. Stoopler completed a General Practice Residency at the Brooklyn VA Medical Center in 2000, and an Oral Medicine Fellowship at Penn Dental Medicine in 2002. Dr. Stoopler holds Fellowships in the American Association of Hospital Dentists, International College of Dentists, Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh, England), Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Glasgow) and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Medicine and American Board of Special Care Dentistry. Currently, he maintains an active clinical oral medicine practice at Penn Dental Medicine and is a consultant to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Stoopler received the University of Pennsylvania's Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching, the Martin S. Greenberg Teaching Award for Oral Medicine (3 times), the Basic Science Teaching Award and the Alumni Award of Merit from Penn Dental Medicine. Dr. Stoopler is the only member of the dental school faculty in Penn Medicine's Academy of Master Clinicians. He is a Past President of the American Academy of Oral Medicine and received the Craig S. Miller Diamond Pin Award in 2024, which is the highest award offered by the Academy.
Dr. Stoopler has published and presented over 350 peer-reviewed manuscripts, scientific abstracts, books, book chapters, monographs, expert viewpoints and web-based educational materials on various topics related to oral medicine. He is an editor of Little and Falace's Dental Management of the Medically Compromised Patient, a contributing author to Burket's Oral Medicine, Contemporary Oral Medicine and ADA Guide to Dental Therapeutics. Dr. Stoopler served as editor of the Medical and Dental Clinics of North America and Dermatologic Clinics. Dr. Stoopler serves on the editorial board of the journal Special Care in Dentistry and is a reviewer for several prominent dental and medical journals.
Dr. Stoopler's primary research interest is development of oral medicine education and its integration into current health care practices. He was a co-investigator on a multi-center, NIH-sponsored grant for inter-professional education regarding acute and chronic pain management.
